First-aid steps before your appointment
Tooth pain
Rinse with warm salt water, gently floss to dislodge any trapped food, and use a cold compress on the cheek. Avoid placing aspirin directly on the gum.
Knocked-out tooth
Hold the tooth by the crown, rinse it briefly in milk or saline, and reinsert it into the socket if possible. Otherwise store it in milk or saliva and reach a dentist within 30 to 60 minutes.
Broken or chipped tooth
Save any tooth fragments. Rinse the mouth with warm water and apply a cold compress to reduce swelling.
Facial swelling
Swelling can indicate infection. Apply a cold compress and call the clinic. Seek emergency medical care if swelling spreads to the eye or affects breathing or swallowing.
Lost filling or crown
Keep the area clean and avoid chewing on that side. If a crown comes off intact, bring it with you to your appointment.
